TURKMENISTAN: Baptist freed
Vyacheslav Kalataevsky has been freed after being amnestied from a three year labour camp sentence.
In March this year, Vyacheslav, a Baptist leader from Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea , was arrested. Several days later he was charged with illegally crossing the border in 2001. He was sentenced to three years ordinary regime labour camp.
After three months, Vyacheslav was moved again to a labour camp in Seydi, 1,200 kilometers away, but without the knowledge of his family.
Since independence in 1991, Turkmen have revived their Islamic heritage. There are only around 2,000 Turkmen evangelical Christians and they often face fines and imprisonment for simply meeting together.
However, this week, one month after being amnestied, Vyacheslav was finally freed from a detention centre in the capital Ashgabad and allowed to join family members who live in the city. Although his wife, Valentina, was forced to give an official statement that Vyacheslav would “not violate the law”, further restrictions were not placed on his movement. “I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to all who supported me and my family during my imprisonment”, said Vyacheslav.

Please pray for:
• Thank God for the release of Vyacheslav from prison and pray that he will have wisdom in making decisions over his future.
• Ask God to provide for the needs of Christians who are unemployed, abused and discouraged.
• Pray for the well being and witness of other Christians who remain in detention in Turkmenistan
Thank you for praying with us.
